About the maker
Swiss engineer Louis Lachenal made concertinas for Wheatstone before starting to sell instruments under his own name in 1858. After his death in 1861, his widow Elisabeth ran the firm; employees later took it over as Lachenal & Co. The workshop closed in 1933.
The Concertina Museum records English, Anglo and duet examples. Its No. 6038 is an early 48-key English concertina with flat rosewood ends and machine-cut fretwork; the illustration is an interpretation of that documented instrument.
