About the maker
The firm was established by Charles Wheatstone, uncle of the inventor Sir Charles Wheatstone, and moved to Conduit Street in 1824. The original company ceased trading in 1974; Steve Dickinson acquired its remaining equipment and rights in 1975 and continued making concertinas under the Wheatstone name.
The International Concertina Association's museum records a 48-key English-system Wheatstone concertina sold in December 1844. Its six-sided rosewood ends informed the illustration. In the English system, each button sounds the same note in both bellows directions.
