Aníbal “Pichuco” Troilo was a Buenos Aires bandoneonist, composer and tango orchestra leader. He formed his own orquesta típica in 1937 and led it for more than three decades.
His bandoneon playing gave the orchestra a distinctive voice. Alongside its recordings, he wrote tangos with lyricist Homero Manzi and composed an instrumental tribute to him after his death. For the tango Sur, Troilo wrote the music and Manzi the lyrics. His memorial piece Responso is an instrumental tango. His work encompasses songs for his orchestra’s singers and pieces led by the bandoneon, alongside decades of leadership of his own ensemble.
