Dominguinhos was born in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, and learned the sanfona from his father. Luiz Gonzaga noticed him as a child; he later joined Gonzaga's tours and recordings. Rooted in baião and forró, his playing also drew on bossa nova and jazz.

His song Eu Só Quero um Xodó, co-written with Anastácia, reached a national audience through Gilberto Gil's 1973 recording. Dominguinhos also performed with Gal Costa and worked as a singer and arranger. His album Iluminado won the 2012 Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Roots Album. He connected northeastern traditions with the wider field of Brazilian popular music.
