Gus Viseur

Brought a jazz feel to musette waltzes through guitar-led interplay, as preserved in his wartime recordings.

Years
1915–1974
Country
Belgium
Instrument
Jazz accordion

Gus Viseur helped bring a jazz phrasing to the musette waltz. His recordings place the accordion alongside the guitar and rhythm section, where the dance pulse leaves room for syncopation and improvisation.

The French label Frémeaux documents two sides recorded by Viseur and his orchestra on 9 August 1940. Swing Valse is credited to Viseur and guitarist Pierre “Baro” Ferret; Flambée montalbanaise is credited to Viseur. The reissued recordings show how he kept the pulse of musette dance music while bringing a jazz sensibility into his exchanges with guitar.
