Kimmo Pohjonen was born in Viiala, Finland, in 1964. He moved from folk and dance music into an experimental solo practice, amplifying and processing the accordion and combining it with theatrical visual performance. He has toured internationally across folk, rock and contemporary-music venues.
His debut solo album Kielo appeared in 1999. The solo project Zone 6 combines amplified accordion with electronic sound and stage imagery. Finnish broadcaster Yle records his Pro Finlandia medal and international award nominations. His work treats the accordion’s bellows, buttons and physical action as sources of new sounds, not only familiar melodies.
