Maria Kalaniemi is a Finnish accordionist and composer who plays the free-bass button accordion. Her music draws on Finnish folk traditions and classical training, with room for both composition and improvisation.
Her albums often take shape through close collaborations. Bellow Poetry is mainly a solo album, inspired by runo singing, pastoral melodies and Finnish Roma music; Olli Varis plays guitar on two tracks. Åkerö, recorded with pianist Timo Alakotila, explores a different exchange of melodies and textures.
