Mogens Ellegaard was a Danish accordionist and educator who brought the free-bass accordion into modern concert music. In 1958 he and Ole Schmidt premiered Symphonic Fantasy and Allegro with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. His work with Nordic composers, including Leif Kayser, helped establish new repertoire for the instrument.
In 1970 Ellegaard became Denmark's first academy teacher of accordion and later held a professorship. On Accordion Fireworks (1959) he performed solo arrangements of classical pieces. Contemporary Danish Accordion Music (1987) records works by Schmidt, Per Nørgård, Niels Viggo Bentzon and others, showing the music that grew around his instrument.
