Pauline Oliveros was an American composer and accordionist whose work helped shape electronic music and improvisation. From the experiments of the 1960s, she developed Deep Listening, a practice of attending closely to all sounds, and carried it into performance and education.
She joined the instrument's bellows and breath with her own voice on the 1982 album Accordion & Voice, which includes Horse Sings from Cloud. The Wanderer placed an ensemble of accordions and percussion in an experimental setting shaped by dance rhythms. Oliveros was a research professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and founded an institute for the study and teaching of Deep Listening.
