Richard Galliano plays accordion and bandoneon and composes across musette, jazz and tango. He calls his approach “New Musette”: he treats the French dance tradition as material for jazz ensembles and new compositions.
His two albums below, separated by twenty-five years, make that idea easy to follow. The first sets his accordion with guitar, bass and drums; the later recording returns to the same musical thread with a new group. New Musette features guitarist Philip Catherine, bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Aldo Romano. On New Jazz Musette he returned to earlier material with different collaborators, showing how the same musical ideas could change over time.
